What to Wear for Fall Family Photo Sessions

If there is one question I get asked before every session, no matter what type of session it is, it’s “what should we wear?” And I get it! We all want to look good and feel good, and we don’t want our outfits to be distracting or to take away from the connections and moments we are trying to capture. The good news is that planning what you are going to wear is a lot simpler than you think. We’ll walk through it step by step to make sure you look and feel your best!

First, let’s start with what not to wear. It’s best to avoid graphics or colors that are too bright (like red or hot pink) near the face, as they will cause color casts or reflect the color back onto your skin. Stick with lighter solids, neutrals, and simple patterns.

Second, we follow a formula. There are so many variations of what you can do here, but I prefer to go with two main colors + two accent colors. Then you can add in one large print + one small print. Next, vary the textures and silhouettes. And voila, you’re finished! I know it sounds easier than it feels, but give it a try. And don’t be afraid to use a few shades of your main color. The monochromatic look can work really well!

Third, always dress mom first. It can be hard to find that perfect dress that makes mom look and feel great, so it’s best to start there and then work around it. That way you know whether you already have your large print or small print or texture covered. Kids can be fairly easy to shop for, and the odds are really good that you will be shopping for dad straight out of his own closet!

Fourth, don’t forget the feet. If your pictures are in-home, lose the socks and shoes. If they are anywhere else, you need appropriate footwear. For boys, that might mean loafers or floafers over tennis shoes. Footwear should match the outfit and location. Tons of places have cute casual shoes for kids that are photo worthy. For moms, remember that heels aren’t great on grass and wedges or flats work much better.

Really, the most important thing is that everyone wears something that fits and is comfortable. Photoshop can’t fix ill-fitting clothes! And, of course, I’m always here to answer any questions you have and help in any way. You’ll even get a what to wear guide when you book your session.
